Timing of the first dental exam and the importance of early dental care in children.
When Should the First Visit Happen?
Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend that a child's first dental visit should occur as soon as the first tooth erupts — and no later than the first birthday. This early visit allows the pediatric dentist to assess cavity risk, examine the gums, and provide the parents with oral hygiene education at the most critical stage of development.
The misconception that "there are only a few teeth, so it's too early" leads to missed opportunities for prevention and early detection.
Early Childhood Caries: A Hidden Threat
Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood worldwide. Falling asleep with a bottle containing milk or juice, frequent sweet beverage consumption, and insufficient oral hygiene are the main causes. Early cavities don't just affect baby teeth — they can damage the development of permanent teeth growing beneath them.
Regular pedodontic check-ups allow early detection and intervention. Preventive treatments such as fluoride application and fissure sealants provide lasting protection for your child's smile.
What Happens at the First Visit?
Making the first dental experience positive is crucial for a child's long-term relationship with dental care. At DentARF, Spec. Dt. Remziye Kaya Öğreden's child-centred approach transforms the first visit into a fun and fear-free experience. The appointment typically includes:
- Intraoral and gum examination
- Cavity risk assessment
- Parent education on correct brushing technique
- Dietary habit review
- Fluoride application if indicated
What Can Parents Do at Home?
Begin cleaning the first tooth with a damp gauze or finger brush. From age 2–3, switch to a soft-bristled, child-sized toothbrush. Up to age 2, use fluoride-free toothpaste; from age 2–6, use a rice grain-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Filling the bedtime bottle with water instead of milk or juice dramatically reduces cavity risk. The DentARF pediatric dentistry team is here to support your child's healthy, fearless smile.
