Aftercare Guide for Dental Implants

The success of implant treatment largely depends on post-procedure care. The first 72 hours are critical.

The First 72 Hours: The Most Critical Period

The 72 hours immediately following dental implant placement are the most sensitive phase of the healing process. During this window, osseointegration — the bonding between bone and implant surface — is just beginning, and any adverse factor can disrupt it. Protecting the blood clot, preventing infection, and controlling swelling are the main goals of this period.

Apply ice to the surgical area throughout the first day (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) to significantly reduce swelling. Keeping your head elevated with a pillow also helps prevent blood pooling and inflammation.

Diet and Nutrition

Nutrition directly influences the healing process after implant surgery. For the first two days, choose only liquid and very soft foods: yogurt, compote, lukewarm soup, mashed banana and soft bread are all suitable. Avoid hard, chewy, dry or crusty foods entirely. Hot beverages, smoking, and alcohol all significantly slow healing and raise the risk of implant failure — avoid them for at least two weeks.

Oral Hygiene After Implant Surgery

Do not brush or rinse the surgical area on the first day. After 24 hours, you may gently rinse with warm salty water. From the second day onwards, use a soft-bristled toothbrush with gentle strokes around the implant site. Use an antiseptic mouthwash only after consulting your dentist — the alcohol in some rinses may irritate sensitive tissues. Chlorhexidine-based rinses prescribed by your clinician are highly effective at controlling bacteria.

Healing and Follow-Up Appointments

Full osseointegration typically takes 3–6 months. Regular follow-up appointments during this period are vital. Your dentist will monitor bone density and implant stability through periodic X-rays. Once osseointegration is complete, the prosthetic crown is placed — and your implant will look and function almost identically to a natural tooth. With regular 6-monthly check-ups, your implant can last decades.

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Pain or swelling that increases after the first few days
  • Fever above 38°C (100.4°F)
  • Unpleasant odour or taste at the implant site
  • Mobility or movement of the implant
  • Excessive or persistent bleeding
